The Apple MacBook notebooks do not have 3G built-in, but it's relatively easy to use the BlackBerry Storm's 3G connection. CNET's Brooke Crothers compared an HP 2510p ultraportable with built-in Verizon EV-DO modem to a MacBook Air using the Storm's 3G connection and the results were impressive. The MacBook Air / Storm combination saw download speeds of up to 1,088 Kbps (with an average of 500-600 Kbps) compared to 1392 Kbps on the HP 2510p. The following are directions for using your BlackBerry Storm as a modem with a MacBook.

Pair the two Bluetooth devices, then configure the phone on the MacBook side, telling it during the configuration process that you want to "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection." In Verizon's case, the account name is yourphonenumber@vzw3.com Then, in the next screen, you select "vendor: other" and "Verizon support, PC5220."

Yet another unofficial BlackBerry Storm 9530 OS has been leaked. BlackBerry OS 4.7.0.99 is making the rounds in the usual corners of the Internet. Some of our readers have installed the update and you can find discussions on the latest update in our BlackBerry forums.

Hedone Design has released a new Windows 7 inspired theme for the BlackBerry Bold, Curve 83xx and 8800 series. "Se7en" is a stunning theme and you can read more about it's features in our BlackBerry forums. "Se7en" retails for $7 and is available in the Everything Berry Software Store.

With all the coverage of President Barack Obama's unwillingness to part with his BlackBerry, Microsoft's Randy Seigel seized the opportunity to comment on why it might not be our best interest for President Obama to use a BlackBerry. "You would be sending your data outside the country; we wouldn't want the casual musings or official communications of the most important person in the world being intercepted by others," said Seigel who works as an Enterprise Mobile Strategist on federal government projects.

Say one thing for Seigel, he's entertaining. While BlackBerry data does channel up north, to say that data snooping could occur is a bit of a stretch, even for a Microsoft employee.

A reader on BGR sent in this screenshot of his bold that includes an icon for Visual Voicemail. That would certainly be a nice feature upgrade if it pans out. Selecting the icon resulted in a "provisioning unsucessful" error, so clearly this is not ready for primetime. The reader was using build 4.6.0.219, a far cry from the official 4.6.0.167 build that is the last official build from AT&T.
