RIM Hiring WebKit Developer, iPhone-like browser in the works

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

The BlackBerry is no doubt a fierce email machine, but the browser still falls short when compared to webkit browsers found on the iPhone and Palm Pre. RIM is looking to hire a WebKit developer as per this listing on LinkedIn, so it certainly appears that a WebKit browser is in the works.

WebKit browsers tend to offer desktop-like experience on a mobile device, featuring fast and accurate rendering of web pages. If and when a WebKit browser gets released for the BlackBerry, it’s not clear if this will be available on current generation BlackBerry devices or a future, unreleased BlackBerry. In any event, this is certainly good news for those frustrated with the browsing experience on a BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Browser To Offer Full Flash and Silverlight Support

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

RIM is reportedly planning to include full support for Flash and Silverlight in upcoming versions of their BlackBerry web browser. They are not talking Flash-lite, but full Flash. If RIM is able to deliver their next generation browser that is on par with Safari, they might just one-up Apple if able to offer support for Flash. To date, Apple doesn’t seem interested in supporting Flash. Palm’s webOS browser will likely see an update to offer support for Flash lite.

Word has it this will not find it’s way to devices until next summer, but it’s certainly encouraging. It appears RIM is taking on the challenge of developing a browser that will compete with the best of them.
