That is NOT true, the phone (voice and SMS) will work without a data plan, but Verizon forces you to have one and WON'T sell you a blackberry without one. I purchased two 8130's a couple of weeks ago, a silver one for me and a pink one for my wife (it was about time she stepped into the 21st century and get a smartphone). I have a iPhone I use for work, so I need to slim down on the blackberry so I didn't have two bulky phones...
