Well. My exp with 4.5 for sprint 8830 has been bad.
1. Free memory dropped to 8mb. Then also I just kept the device idle & kept chking the device for memory. I foudn that the free memory is automatically decreasing even when u r not rxing or txming any data/mails/calls etc. Wieird???
2. I foudn that my TCP is no longer wqorking in GSM.
3. When I take data backup, my address book & calender reminders are not getting backed up.
4, Lastly I revertted back to OS 4.2 & everything was back to working normally. Even my TCP started wrking again.
Till I get answers to my surprisez, I am staying with 4.2

Clive, how were you able to check your app free memory?

Sav, go back and read his post again. I do not see the use of the term App memory except in your posts. I have a feeling that App Memory is something that started with 4.6 and/or 4.7 devices.
He is posting the Free Memory as I did...

Thanks, Steve. I thought he meant app free memory. You're correct (shocker, huh?)

4.5 on Verizon 8830
I'm running a leaked/unofficial version of OS 4.5.0.101 on my Verizon 8830. There's no "app memory" there, either. Can't comment on the Sprint part of the post.
One thing I do notice, though, about OS 4.5: When I run out of memory now (which I often do) it doesn't delete messages from my In-Box! Which is awesome. I used to dread low memory, because the BlackBerry 8830 running OS 4.2 just would cannibalize all your incoming messages, meaning your berry could buzz and buzz, but you'd never see incoming messages. Now, even when I am on "0" free memory, I still get my emails and texts.

Hi Shotwell and welcome to EB:
Odd that you are not losing any messages, but you could be losing call logs. However, it is really not a good thing to let it get down to 0 Free. I am surprised you aren't noticing any instability or funkiness.
If you get down that low often it would be a good idea for you to install SoftReset and do a reset every couple of days or so just to avoid running out of memory. Using SoftReset eliminates the need to open the back and physically pull the battery.
Just a suggestion...
Visit and post often....

Also, since you do have a BlackBerry with a keyboard, you can press ALT, the shift key on the right, and DEL and it will do the same as the app Steve suggested. P.S. Welcome to EB.

Two Nice Items In 4.5
I have found two items that I don't recall being a part of the original 4.2 OS and they are both items that had annoyed me for awhile:
1) I use the AutoDim option and it is okay. However, there are many occasions I want the screen to be brighter, but in the dark the auto setting will not brighten. I found that after the upgrade, I can press and release the on/off button on the top once and the screen brightens. Yeah....
2) I often whined that there did not seem to be a way to shut the screen off manually as I could do on the Treo. The other discovery after the upgrade is that if I press and release the on/off button at the top twice, the screen now goes dark when I choose instead of having to wait for it to time out.
Both are small issues, but I am happy to see they are there. Frankly, I am not 100% sure they weren't there before the upgrade, but I think I would have noticed as I did now....
Oh well, small things for small minds...
