You're going to have to resize it a tiny bit. It should look almost exactly the same though.
Check your PM's.

Hi Chris
I'm a newbie to Blackberry phones and have just got a Bold from a friend. I'm getting my head around although am a little disappointed with the battery life. I would like to use one of my own photos as the background and have it without any icons or text, clock or anything showing on top. Is it possible to do this and if so how?

Hi Narwhal and welcome to EB:
First, which Bold did you get? I am guessing the 9000. How old is the BB? When you say disappointing battery life can you clarify a bit? Are you getting 7 hours, 14 hours, one full day or what?
There are many issues that can affect battery life so we will attempt to address a few....
1) What OS Version are you running? Look in Options > About > Look at the third line or so. It will begin with v4.6.X.XXX. Some older OS versions may have battery life issues.
2) A major issue can be to make sure you are shutting down applications using the menu and Close. Hitting the Back or End key doesn't always shut them down. To see what is running press and hold the ALT key > Press and release the Back key > A popup will come up and you can scroll through to see what applications are running. Note that the five "Main" apps you can't shut off are Home Screen, Browser, Messages, BlackBerry Messenger and Phone (or Call Log).
3) Are you in a fringe cellular reception area? If so the battery can drain searching for a signal constantly. If you have very weal signal strength check with your carrier to make sure you have received the latest PRL updates.
4) If you are on 3G and not surfing the web see if you can shut off 3G keeping it on 2G. You won't see any performance hits, but your battery will be happier.
5) Is BlueTooth left on even though it isn't being used? Turn it off.
6) Is WiFi left on, but not being used? Turn it off.
7) Do you have applications running in the background such as WeatherBug (BIG drain), RSS Feeds, FaceBook Alerts, IM Programs looking for messages, etc.....Anything running in the background uses power.
If the device is a couple years old the battery could be nearing the end of useable life. All rechargable batteries have a certain number of charge cycles before they begin to wear out.
Let us know how the above list looks to you and we can work from there.
Regarding the personal picture, you can use just about any picture as a background. You should resize to accommodate the screen and the size is 480 x 320. You should save the picture to the Media Card (assuming you have one installed) and then from your Home Screen > Media > Pictures > Find where you stored it and open the picture > BB Menu key > Set As Home Screen Image.
I hope this helps.

Hi Steve, many thanks for the advice on battery life. I shall instigate a few of your recomendations asap. I have already succeeded in using one of my own photos as a home screen image but I cannot make it appear solely as the photograph without any icons, clock etc etc appearing over the top of it. Is it possible to have simply the photo and nothing else?
