Bold or storm, this is the question...

    Hi guys!

im from spain and i have a question,i have read a lot but im a bit confused.
I'm gonna get a BB Bold or a Storm, (i'm only need to choose)from a friend working in Vodafone next week, i need to unlock the BB beacuse im using orange, but i think this will not be a problem, isn't?

I'm between this 2 models, i now that the Bold is better CPU and Wifi but the Storm has bigger screen ans is more "new".

Im not going to pay any data plan so here is my question to decide wjat to choose:

Can i use the wifi in the bold without a data plan?

i know that i can not use the push email and a lot other application made for BB if i don't have any data plan, but i actually don't care about this.
I want to know if i can surt with the wifi and see my mail from the browser, i also read that i may dowload another browser as opera-mini.

I have read so much and im confused, some peopl says that i can't use the wifi witouth a data plan and the services books and some says that i can.

Regarding the service books everybody is talking about: is this anything i can download from "somwere"

I don't know nothing about BB i have allways use HTC with WM.

    I appreciate you help!

Hi patilona and welcome to EB:

There are many questions in your first post and some are a bit difficult to answer.

First, if you can I would urge you to try both devices to see how they feel, how they react to your useage and decide if you enjoy the hardware. The Storm is a very different system that some people love and some very much dislike. The click-screen (SurePress) technology is not for everyone. As a matter of fact it looks like the Storm 2 recently announced will not include that type of screen. It will be more like the Treo, iPhone, etc. The Storm 2 is also believed to include WiFi, but we will have to wait until Verizon releases it "sometime in the next six months" as they announced.

The Bold is a wonderful device with a bright screen and full Qwerty keyboard as well as WiFi.

Yes, you will be able to access the Internet on WiFi, but NOT using the BB Browser. You MUST use a third-party browser such as Opera Mini or Bolt. This is because you will not have the Service Books for the BB Browser. The third-party browsers do not require Service Books.

Service Books are essentially what tell the hardware how to operate and what features are available to a particular BlackBerry device. They are "pushed" to the phone by the carrier (provider) based on what plan you have signed up for and if you do not sign up for a BlackBerry Data Plan you do not receive the Service Books from your provider. Are they available "elsewhere"? I suppose you are asking can they be obtained illegally? That is possible, but we don't permit discussion of hacking and theft here at EB.

I will say that if you were able to get the Service Books, I can't imagine they would do you much good since as soon as the device requested access to the provider's systems such as BIS email or the Internet their system would know your device PIN number (specific to each phone) does not have a BIS email plan or an Internet plan.

There are many people who have chosen to use BlackBerrys and to not pay for BB Data plans for a variety of reasons. There are also many who would ask why you want a BB if you don't want to pay for a BB Data plan because there will be so many features you won't be able to use. That is a personal decision and as long as you know the limitations it is all good...

I hope this helps you a bit.

Im not sure to be honest, I know some of the other guys here no alot more about blackberry's when it comes to the technical stuff. I had to buy a data plan when i got my phone. AT&T didnt give me any option not to. But im not sure about the WIFI thing.

As far as which phone to choose, i would go with the Bold personally. I think its the best phone out there at this moment.

    Thanks for your answer.
I think im gonna choose the Bold. and if you tell me that i can surf with a 3rd part browser thats perfect for me.
i'm not gonna get a plan yet, but maybe in the future.

one more thing... can i acces to gmail from Opera mino or bolt?

i have allways want a BB and know i have the possibility to get it for free, so why not?

Now i need to read more about the Os, how to update and the application u maybe can use without a Data plan.

    Thanks a lot!
