bcornwell, did you try using the AppLoader instead of the BB DM?
    C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\ResearchInMotion\Applo ader

Of course you should have done the basics:
-Try a different USB port as close to motherboard as possible
-Try different USB cord if available
    -Reboot PC without BB connected
-Reset BB (pull battery count to twenty and replace)
-Connect BB via USB cord. See if recognized
-Uninstall BB DM, reboot, reinstall, reboot and try to connect

If that doesn't work, which DM version are you using? If 5.0, try dowloading and trying 4.6. 4.7 was always a bit buggy.....

Yup, tried the app loader. I started out with DM v5, then downgraded to 4.6, then 4.3.

Is there any reason to think that a desktop computer usb port would behave any differently than a laptop usb port? So far I've only tried this on a laptop.

Also, make sure you start apploader as StevTaz mentioned with the Curve connected to the laptop, and make sure the battery is out of the Blackberry, as soon as the connection message changes from "Com!" to Usb-pin:unknown, pop the battery in the Blackberry, this is the tricky part as the timing has to be just right or you have to start over. Good Luck!

See, but this is the part that never happens. I've tried hooking up the phone with and without the battery, taking the battery out and putting back in while it's connected, and every possible combination in between. I hover the mouse over 'next' and click it continuously as fast as I can to make sure its not just a timing issue. That USB: option never shows up, 'next' always just stays greyed out.

I doubt its a laptop issue, especially since you have tried 2 laptops, maybe its in the setup of Desktop Manager, make sure USB is selected in Options/Connection Options in the Desktop Manager.

Here is a thread that may help or not. Some have found corrupt drivers on their pc when the device is not found. Not sure if that is happening to you but maybe this will help.

That's interesting, the RIMUSB.sys file wasn't in system32/drivers folder. I'll copy it into there and see if it helps.
