    Now an 8330m Curve User....

After whining about the 8830's lack of memory again, my punishment was that I could not have the Sprint Tour (too expensive). They provided me with a new 8330m Curve in Red.

Pretty odd when I look at the free memory and see 47mb+. I was excited if I saw 14mb on the 8830.

Time to learn all about it. Of course a number of my third-party apps would not transfer over as they were made for the 8830.

    Here we go.....

An 8330m has an MEID identifier rather than the well known ESN number. This is due to the fact ESN numbers are running out and a new identifying number system had to be developed.

How to determine if you have an ESN or MEID based device:
    Options > Status
ESN devices - On the Status screen you will see ESN on the display
MEID devices – On the Status screen you will see MEID on the display.
SPECIAL NOTE – You cannot install ESN software on an MEID device and you cannot install MEID software on an ESN device. They are NOT interchangeable.

There really are no 8330e devices, but some may be labelling them as such to let others know they have an "original" ESN-based device.

There are no memory differences between the two 8330 versions. Both have 96mb. BTW, the 8300, 8310 and 8320 all have 64mb. The 8350i (PTT Nextel) has 128mb.

plunker, what third-party apps do you have installed and did you remove the additional languages, sample pictures and sample videos as described in the Tips and Tricks Thread, post #1?

I wonder if your hybrid OS is using more memory that the "standard" OS? After a day of connection to the BES server I have loaded lots of email and a huge corporate Address Book I have settled in at about 42mb. I currently have the 4.5.0.131 OS and I think Sprint had released a 4.5.0.175 version in October. I am going to investigate before upgrading. Haven't noticed any issues so I am not in a rush until I know what the upgrade is intended to fix or enhance.

I loaded the 5.0 for the 8330 and I deleted langs and docs, voice dialing and a few games. Oh! and setupwizards app saved like 2 mbs for me. I will look at the tips thread that you mentioned… also just kept the precision theme and deleted the dimension ones.

Most of the tips I have all ready completed. I think when they made the os the develoer all ready pared down the os with sample pics or at least I could not find it. There is a post that you can delete default tones as long as you move a couple of rim files to your card….

Not sure how much free memory the tour has but my Bold 9700 has 124mb. I believe the tour 2 is supposed to be the cdma sibling to the 9700. Maybe by the time it launches they will spring for an upgrade for you.

Guys I am a 8330m guy now. The 8330 became unresponsive and the sprint center replaced or upgraded in their terms to a 8330m… no more 5.0

plunker, did you have to downgrade the OS back to 4.XXX because 5.0 is not an official Sprint OS or did it not make a difference to them? Or, could they not tell because it wouldn't start or run?

I have been very happy with the Curve and 4.5.0.131. I have been trying out a few apps and the memory has been very steady at 39.5mb - 41.5mb without doing any resets at all. Device has been reliable and responsive.

Now that you aren't on 5.0, what is your memory at now?

    Hi Sav:

I am enjoying the hell out of it. The freedom from worrying about memory is a relief. I have also been trying out some apps with no regard about what it will do to the memory and will I lose emails or phone logs.

The form factor is also much more pleasant as it is a tad smaller and feels nicer in the hand. I thought I would like the keyboard better, but I may have gotten too used to the 8830. I am still just a little uncomfortable with the Curve keyboard and I think it may be due to the device size. I found it easier to hold on to the larger 8830 as I typed, but I think with some more time I will get very used to the Curve size and keyboard. I am very happy to have the spacing between the keys that the Curve has. I did not like how the keys were laid out on the 8830....All on top of each other.

    Don't be a stranger....
