    Help with setting up contacts...

i have a pearl on the Sprint network and everytime i add a new contact it defaults the phone number as their work number instead of their cell number like every other phone i have had. i am new to Blackberry so i don't have any clue how to change the default when saving a number to "mobile". it is just kind of annoying having to retype the number in the "mobile" field of the contact i have already added.

any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi and welcome to EB:

Sorry to tell you there is no way to change this that I am aware of. Keep in mind that BB devices began as and continue to be business devices. The reason this happens is that the work number is the first in the list of numbers for contacts. It is not so much a product of default as it is the way the list was designed. I guess that really does make it default since you can't change the order of their listings.

I assume you are trying to add a number from the call log, correct? I don't know if this will save any effort for you, but if you try this maybe it will help. Please note that I use an 8830 with a full keyboard so what I list from here on relates to keyboard strokes. I am guessing/hoping there is a similar way to do this with the Pearl, but I am not sure....

From the Call Log with the new number highlighted > Menu Button > Add To Address Book > The new contact screen will appear with that darned number in the work number slot. Scroll down to the new work number.
Holding down the Caps key, use the trackball to scroll across the phone number > Menu Button > Cut > Scroll down to Mibile Number > Menu Button > Paste

At least you won't have to retype the number....

On the pearl, if you want to copy a phone number into your address book, and not have it appear as a work number:

From the call log, select the number, from the left key menu, select copy phone number. Then go to your address book, create a new entry, and scroll down to the mobile number section and paste it (using the same menu key).

As steve said, there is no way to not have it default to work number. Yes, a little annoying. But I guess it's the sole caveat compared to everything else the device offers.

Also, the BB pearl (and I'm assuming the Curve as well) does not by default put dashes between the area code and number. I believe this is because when you receive the call, it just comes up with the numbers alltogether (ex: incoming call from 5165551212, instead of (516) 555-1212). This isn't a problem for most, just in my case, since I transferred everything from my old Treo, half the numbers in my phone are in proper format, and half aren't
