Default Treo 755p migration to BB pearl 8130

Hi.
So the Pearl was alot cheaper and recommended over a Treo by Verizon and other users. I hate reentering 120 contacts...so I attempted to do a migration using the migration wizard between my treo and my blackberry pearl...

Problem is I click next and the options for PALM OS/PALM DESKTOP software and the WINDOWS MOBILE are both greyed out so I have no option of choosing one and that stops the whole process...

this is what happens...

What am I supposed to do to make it work?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to EB:

I came to the BB after leaving a Treo 650 and I haven't missed much since.

First, is Palm Desktop installed on the computer you installed BB Desktop Manager to? I will assume yes. Next, when you are trying to perform the migration do you have the Treo connected to the computer or the Pearl?

I have not used the Change Device function personally, but I believe the Treo has to be attached first and the wizard should detect that and prompt you from there.

However, if you still have your Treo you might have better luck if you just change the conduit to sync the Treo with Outlook and then sync your new Pearl with Outlook. You will have to have your Palm install disk to change from the Palm Desktop to Outlook.

Let us know..........

Well, I had both the treo and the Blackberry plugged in at the same time...maybe they conflict with each other...

I ended up using the conduit software and using a whole other computer because I do not have outlook on my computer...I run Vista so I have Windows Mail instead which isn't compatible.

So I got my contatcs moved made a backup and synced up my calendar...

ANYTHING else I should do??

Hi again:

When I logged in from work earlier, I couldn't see the screenshot you had included. That is why I asked about the BB Desktop being installed.

Sounds like you have your contacts, calendar, etc. installed and backed up now and that is a good thing.

What should you do now? Enjoy your new toy!

Please take some time to explore this site and see what has been posted. There are some good posts that will give you ideas. Make sure you check out the thread I started on free software sites here. Also take a look at the Tips and Tricks sticky here.

Did you get your mail set up? I am assuming you are a BIS user, not a corporate BES user?

What are you planning to use your Pearl for? Are you a texter? Do you have friends with BBs and if so, are you aware of the PIN message feature?

How about posting your experiences as you go. Share the good and the not so good (if that happens). There is a bit of a learning curve going from a Treo to the BB, but I am very pleased.

A couple of things I am guessing you won't miss are the freezes and resets...

I did find the BB had a great deal more settings to play with. Almost too many, but I have reached a point I am happy with the way it is set up. I have also found the battery life of my 8830 to be far superior to the Treo. Certainly some of that is due to no touchscreen, but I have become very proficient at one-hand navigation since there is no need to tap the screen.

One big difference is the inability to store programs and data on the SD card as you could with the Treo, but that is rumored to be changed when OS 4.5 is released, "any day, week, month".

How is the suretype for you?

Hello SteveTaz! Just perusing some of the posts, waiting for a mild hangover to subside, saw this one and your post left me wondering about PIN messaging, could you be so kind as to elaborate?

Thanks,

Hi braxtoq:

Here is an explanation. I also added it to the Tips and Tricks sticky in General Topics. I hope it is of help.....

PIN Messaging allows you to text other BlackBerries and not use up text messaging allowances. It also allows you to use BB Messenger, which is a buddy interface. Using PIN messages for a “normal” message or a BB Message doesn't use up texts, just data.

Obviously PIN messaging requires that you have a data plan.

You can find your device’s PIN by clicking Options on the icons home screen > Status. Should be the fifth or so item in the list.

I believe the PIN is unique to each device so if you change devices for any reason you will have to let any PIN buddies know.

Note that you can use PIN messaging from the Email system as well as the BB Messenger.

While in your BB Main (Master) Message box press the Menu button (to the left of the trackball). Scroll down and you will see “Compose PIN” as one of the selections. Keep in mind you have to have contacts with PIN numbers in their contact info to be able to select a recipient from your contact list. You can PIN to an email address, but you might as well email.

From your Address Book, you can look up a contact and if they have a PIN entered into their contact information, after pressing the Menu button you will see PIN “Contact Name” as one of the options.

Well now that sounds just too cool, how long before providers catch up and figure out how to charge for it? Thanks for providing the info without me having to find it in Tips and Tricks, not a good day for research, if you know where I'm coming from,

Question

braxtoq:

<quietly whispering> Since you indicated you travel heavily and should have been packing in your last post, shall we assume you had a few too many lay-overs at those pesky airport bars???

Hope you feel better...

Actually, time is the great healer and I'm much better, auto travel this week, no airports. Co-worker that travels with his own bottle of 15 year old Cuban rum met up with me at a Courtyard, we had a few too many by the pool, then a couple of large glasses of a good cabernet....hangover's hurt more than they used to, as Mr. Jennings put it so eloquently.
