Default Beta OS 4.5.XXXXXX...

Anyone out there been trying the beta? I have seen some good reports and some negative too.

I guess that is why they call it beta.

There still seems to be no firm availability announced yet and I have seen guesses that it will be released in May and others indicating Q3 and Q4.

The Documents To Go feature will be welcomed if it is indeed included, but I understand DataViz is having some real challenges. I also wonder if DocsToGo will wind up in the initial public release.

Just curious how many adventurers there are out there....

I usually jump on Beta versions, however in this case I am concerned I will have to reactivate my Pearl on our company Enterprise server. My company has just issued a warning that non-company owned BB's will not be approved on the network, and since I purchased mine to consolidate phone service with BB service, I'm afraid they won't allow me to reactivate, which is a real bummer!

Hi:

So does your company know you have a non-issued BB on the system now? They issue them, but not to you or did they not give you one because they were aware of your personal one being used already?

I might be concerned if they took the time to issue that warning and if you are on a BES system, I believe they can tell a non-issued device is being used.

You might want to get out in front of this potentially sticky situation by approaching them to iron out the details before it becomes an issue. You know them better than I could though.

If you are on a BES server, they must have registered it initially, no?

I am certainly not looking to stir up trouble for you, but I don't want it to become an issue that will cause you problems by ignoring it. If they are now tightening up their securities they may still come to you in a week or two and you would have to look better if you approach them first. Just a guess though.

Your call by all means...

Well now that is a good question, I had a company issued BB, and my own Motorola Q for voice (the company allows us up to $130 for voice and we can expense the BB usage). I was up for a free renewal on my Verizon cell service and, wanting to consolidate, chose the Pearl for both. I didn't have any problem after cancelling the Company plan BB service and activating the Pearl on the Enterprise server through the Helpdesk, a few others that I know of have done the same, now they have issued a directive stating only company owned devices can be activated. No one I know of has had their non-company owned device deactivated yet though. I am inclined to ride it out and I'm concerned that upgrading the device software will requirt the help desk's support afterwards.

I don't think that upgrading should require reactivation, but you are probably correct for staying away, just in case.

I guess your company is growing into the BB world. If they tacitly allowed users to register their own through the help desk and then issued that directive they could certainly create confusion. Since you and the other owners have working devices I suppose no one wants to raise their hand to ask and draw attention. Very understandable.

I hope it works for you for a long time to come. I think it is probably reasonable to assume it will come to light at some point and you and your coworkers have a very justifiable argument it shouldn't apply since you were on before the directive came out. You know, grandfathered in.

Keep posting....

Just an FYI for anyone else in the same or similar predicament, I found out from a co-worker that by using Desktop Manager while connect to our network via VPN, we can reactivate without the helpdesk, I'll let you know how that works when the fully released 4.5 version is out. Strange......I received a message that this message is too short by 10 characters, there that should do it! OK still getting the same message, I'll try once more

So you will be waiting for the authorized release as I will....

I guess that's why the site likes me....I have a tendency to be wordy. As if you couldn't tell!!!

I will be waiting, is there an official notification service provided by BB for updates, I am sure you will let everyone know if not?

Howdy:

You could sign up for the RSS feeds from blackberry.com, but since the OS updates are all carrier and device specific, you will probably be notified by your carrier first.

That said, I think we will all find out from the various forums before any other method, so keep visiting and posting. This 4.5 upgrade will be BIG NEWS.

Yes, when I find out I will certainly post it. I am hoping others will have it posted here at EB before me though!!!

Also don't forget that the GSM versions will usually get the updated software before CDMA versions do. Just the way RIM operates, at least up to now.
