Default Google Maps with Voice Search

Google has a beta version of Maps with Voice Search for a few BB models, I have a Verizon 8130 Pearl that is supposed to work, but I cannot get the voice search feature to function, You're supposed to be able to activate the voice search by pressing the left convenience key while Google Maps is running, I just get the same old "Say a Command" message. Just wondering if anyone else has been able to get it to work,

Howdy braxtoq:

Maybe that's why it is called "experimental"?

Seriously, you did connect to the mobile server and downloaded and installed the update? Your GMM version is 2.2.1 instead of 2.2.0? I had to ask....

Apparently you are not alone in having trouble. Take a look here. In that blog someone posted a link and said that got it working for him.

I have to wonder if it is related to VZW disabling the built-in GPS capabilities, but that probably shouldn't matter.

Let us know what you find out....

I hope you had a great 4th!!!

Well well, it's Mr. SteveTaz with the quick response! I did install 2.2.1, downloaded directly to my BB as well as having Google send me a link from their Beta version page, I have posted on several sites and some posters with success are with Verizon. I know it's Beta, but, if some are successful there must be a reason my BB isn't working.

By the way, our 4th was good, neighborhood parade, cookout in the park and a keg of Yuengling, hope your was just as well,

I don't have a Pearl and the talking Google Maps, so excuse the "20 questions"...Are you following this part of the instructions before pressing the side button:
-Press “0″ to center the map view around your location
-Press the left-side key and hold it while you say the name or type of business you’re looking for

-Did you have the side button programmed for something else before installing this and then had to put back to the voice?
-After installing the updated map and/or remapping the side button, did you try hard resetting with a battery pull?

Yepper, I followed the directions to the letter, and the left side button has always been programmed for voice dialing, I had not pulled the battery until now............................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..........................OK that was weird, holding down the left side key and I recevied the "reading address books" message followed by a balnk screen then a reboot, now I'm back to "Say A Command"

Well, I hope Google gets the issues worked out. It is interesting that most of the users posting problems seemed to be Verizon and Sprint. I wonder if it is something in the CDMA OS versions?

Again, the title of it is experimental and I take that to be the equivalent of BETA. I have no doubt that Google will be moving pretty fast to get updated versions so I do believe you will see a resolution fairly soon. Probably a lot sooner than RIM's official release of the 4.5 OS, but I digress.....

OK, now I have it working on my Pearl 8130 from Verizon, I uninstalled version 2.2.1, navigated to http://m.google.com/maps?dc=gmm on the BB browser, clicked on "Install Now" selected the check box for "set application permission" and then "Download". When the application permissions window opens, I selected "Allow" for "Media Access", "KeyStroke Injection" "Browser Filtering" and Screen Capturing", probably just need Media Access for it work, I also had switched the default setting for the Left Convenience Key to "Search" but changed it back to Voice Dialing after loading Google Maps again. If you wait until Google Maps has loaded and you change the default permissions for Google Maps after it has been opened, you''ll have to close it and restart for the permissions to take effect. Good Luck!
