8GB Storage Card....
I understand that alot of people use their memory cards for pictures, videos and music. My question is, why would RIM include a 8GB storage card and NOT allow apps to be stored to it? It seems like you can hardly even download 5 apps without constantly being worried about the avail. app memory...
end rant...

Its not too bad. Most apps take less than 1mb. FWIW, the other day I was down to 9mb memory (literally) and was listening to slacker, checking weather, and surfing the internet with little lag.

This is probably a leftover from when the BB systems were designed. Remember, it was a business device basically designed to get email. Since consumers have found BB and RIM began actively pursuing the market, demands have changed.
One big issue RIM faces that other vendors do not...maintaining the high level of security BB is famous for and that is expected of it. Moving apps outside the "protection" of the device and the built-in controls may have something to do with it.
I think we will see some relaxation of this, but that is purely speculation and it may be more of a technological challenge than we realize. I wonder if at some point we might see BBs designed to meet the DoD requirements and others designed for consumers.

With the Storm is would be pretty tough to fill up the 1gb internal storage with apps, the part that runs low is basically the device's RAM. I believe that the Storm has 64MB of that, which means that you can only have 64MB worth of applications running at any time. If you kill programs you aren't using, and make sure to use the memory cleaner app (which you can set up to run whenever the device is holstered), you shouldn't end up in too much trouble.
I've noticed that BBAW is a huge memory hog, and it leaks horrible, so if your memory is falling fast, and you have that installed, it could very well be the culprit.
Back to the regular question lol. I agree with Steve, that it is probably some sort of technical limitation that isn't easy to change.
I have tons of apps installed on my device, and I still have 874.2MB of free space. However, my avaliable application free memory somehow droped to 42.3KB (yes, that is a K), device is only slightly laggy, but I think I'm ditching app world and pulling the battery anyways.

If you have 30 mb there is no way in hell you going to get 30 apps even if they're under 1mb. With this phone you can have 30mb and an hour later have 20 mb or less.
Sancho, there's a difference between app memory and storage memory. In this case, they're talking about storage memory - Nothing to do with app memory.

Huh? Isn't the original post all about app memory? He's talking about how you can hardly download 5 apps with out worrying about the available app memor sorry if i'm wrong I thought the thread was about that.....:

Aren't the apps that are downloaded installed on storage memory. Isn't the app memory what is used when apps are actually running? Just trying to use logic. Or is this one of those things where logic doesn't make sense?
