With alltel's data plan, that is like for all smartphone including the BB right? I'm worried now.

It appears that for contracting and pricing they do not make a distinction. I just picked the smart choice 500 and had a choice of the Touch or various BB devices under that plan.

That is how I read it as well . . . doesn't hurt to give them a buzz in the morning though to make sure.

Be aware that the data plan for a BlackBerry MUST state that it fully supports the BB handsets. The reason is that you are actually routed through the RIM servers. That is how push mail works.

A BB will work on a non BB plan, but the device will be somewhat crippled. You will be able to use the phone and SMS, but NOT using the BB services such as push email, BB Messenger, the BB Browser, PIN messaging, etc.

You would have to try OperaMini for an internet connection.

If you get a WiFi equipped Curve, that may be a helpful option. Some providers even lock that down if there is no BB Data Plan.

Also, if a rebate is being offered and that factors into your decision to buy, if a BB Data plan is not activated the rebate will not apply (fine print). Of course if there are instant rebates at the store that would be different.

Finally, to my knowledge, Verizon is the only NA carrier that requires a BB Data plan be purchased or they won't sell you the BB.

    Thought you should be aware...

Correct. And that would mean it is indeed specifically noted as fully supporting the BB system (it has to be coded as a BlackBerry to know how to use what network)...
