As far as what he did to chane the color, sure, it will change it, but I wouldn't recommend it. First, to have a piece of paper covering the light source will cut down on the amount of light that gets to the trackball probably making it darker. Second, placing a foreign object under a trackball mechanisim that moves will probably create a friction that may cause the paper to release fibers that will stick to the mechanism. Especially because the paper was filled with moisture and color from the pen. I would also suspect that the friction will also attract lint and dirt.
That is, of course, my opinion and you should feel free to try it if you want. You may not see any bad effect. I sure would like to know what happens after a few weeks or more. Does the trackball start to stick?
You could also consider coloring the trackball itself with indellible magic marker colors, which I have seen done. That will probably limit the change to only one color since you are coloring the actual trackball instead of placing paper over the light source.
Using this method, the only way to make the light darker is to use a dark color. If you use a light/bright color, it doesn't block any light. The LED is bright enough to shine through the paper very well.
If you use a small enough piece of paper, it doesn't get in the way of any of the trackball mechanisms. The LED is placed towards the side and not directly under the trackball or any of the rollers.
No lint, no dirt.
Even after months, the trackball does not stick.
All of the above is what I've experienced with numerous BBs.
