Default Help for my helpless hubby!

Hi, everyone! I am new here, as I don't have a BB. I have the original Motorola Q, and I "hang out" at that sister site too often. Hubby wanted a BB, so he got one, & is clueless on how to work it. I set up his e-mail/contacts/and speed dials, so he thinks I'm wonderful (for now at least...).

How does he get on the internet??? We go to "browser", & no "browser" appears. I'm "sort of" proficient on my Q, but this has me stumped. Wants Google or Yahoo as homepage, and would like to be ble to "surf the net" as easily as I do.

Sorry so long winded, but I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Sherri and welcome to EB:

First things first. When you click on the browser icon, what does appear? If it is something like a Links page or a Bookmarks page, try pressing the Menu button (left of the trackball) and select "Go To..." Enter something like Google.com and press the trackball or the Enter key. What happens?

What model BB did you/he get? What carrier is the service through? Did you sign up for a BlackBerry data plan? How long ago did you activate the account? On the main screen what do you see in the upper right corner, near the signal strength icon? 1XEV, EDGE, edge, etc? When you click on the "Manage Connections" icon, what is listed and what is the status?

Let's get through this and make sure you are connected to the Internet and then we can walk through changing the Home Page and more....

Let us know

Hi, Steve! Thanks for the quick reply. He has the BB Curve. Service provider is Verizon. I believe he signed up for BB plan, because I added him to my family plan ($9.99 per add'l phone) plus a $30.00 data plan for the BB. (My Q has a separate data plan, which I pay $44.99 a month for...)

When I click on his browser icon, I see:
Default Browser: Internet Browser
Default Font Family: BBAlpha Sans
Default Font Size: 8
Minimum Font size: 6
Minimum Font Style: Plain
Default View: Column

It goes on, but you get the idea...

When I click on button next to scroll wheel (on left), a box pops up w/: Now Playing
Change Option/call voice mail/save options/switch application/close.

I can get to a screen that shows: Services/E-mail accounts/Settings...etc.

Now what? Sorry this is so slow, but I am posting from my Q at Hershey Park, while waiting in line for Storm Runner.

Thanks again for all your help!

When you are on the next line, try going to Options > Advanced Options > Browser > Default Browser configuration > click on Internet Browser and do you see BlackBerry Browser as an option? If so, select it and see if that resolves it. (also change the Default MDS browser too)

You may have to Hard Reset after the change. With the device on, pull the battery, count to 20 and replace the battery. It might take up to 4-5 minutes to restore so don't get nervous....

Sounds like Verizon didn't set the Internet up for you. Not very friendly. When was it activated? Some services can take up to 24 hours or more to be pushed to your device.

Let us know....Isn't this exciting?

And in the event that does not work try this:
Options > Advanced Options > Host Routing Table

You should see a list of numbers next to your carrier name. Highlight the one that is in BOLD. Then click the Menu Button (remember? Next to the trackball) > Register Now. That will send you a message stating you are registered with the wireless network.

Any luck now?

If the Host Routing Table has no list of numbers you either have no BB Data plan OR you might be on lower case edge or gprs or <gasp> sos (instead of EDGE GPRS EVDO) meaning a weak signal area that you can't access data from.

Keep us posted....

Sherri:

So sorry. I thought I posted a response from my BB last night, but looks like it didn't go through. I was out and away from the PC....

This is not something you find through the browser. From the main icon screen look for the icon that looks like a wrench. That is the Options icon I was referring to.

Then follow the steps in post #5.
