AT&T Limiting GPS Functionality of BlackBerry 8820

August 17, 2007

The upcoming BlackBerry 8820, expected to release September 15th on AT&T, will reportedly ship with limited GPS functionality.

According to reports from BlackBerry Cool, AT&T has locked down GPS functionality so that it only works with 3rd party software TeleNav. The reasoning behind this move is even more bizarre. Apparently, AT&T does not want to release a product with "superior" features to the iPhone. RIM executives were livid, but AT&T offered no options as they did not wish to create unecessary competition for the iPhone. The end result will find the T-Mobile 8820 being better than the AT&T version.
