Garmin Offers Lifetime Navigation for BlackBerry OwnersBy: Christopher MeinckMay 20, 2008
Garmin is looking to make inroads with BlackBerry owners, offering them free lifetime upgrades on their Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry product. The offer is only for BlackBerry devices equipped with GPS (BlackBerry 8310, BlackBerry 8800). Although not listed, we expect the BlackBerry Bold will be included in this offer.
The software is downloadable upon purchase directly from Garmin. The mapping data is actually stored at Garmin, so the download will fit on your device. To utilize the Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry software, you must have a data plan. In areas where service might be spotty, you could theoretically have issues with your navigation. While the lifetime offer is intriguing, the other option would be Garmin's Mobile XT which provides pre-loaded maps on a memory card. This one-time, $99.99 purchase is only available in North America and will give customers who own BlackBerry devices unlimited use of Garmin Mobile’s turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions for the life of their specific BlackBerry. Users will also have unlimited access to Garmin Mobile’s dynamic content such as traffic, weather conditions and forecasts, fuel prices and more. The one-time purchase Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry is designed to meet the navigation needs of customers who prefer a one-time purchase rather than continuous monthly payments. “Garmin is one of the first to offer a one-time purchase navigation package for BlackBerry devices,” said Charles Morse, Garmin’s director of mobile and online marketing. “Having turn-by-turn directions on a BlackBerry is essential to mobile professionals because it takes the stress out of navigating to that important business meeting or child’s soccer game. It helps people arrive at their destination every time, while taking into consideration uncontrollable variables like traffic.” via EndadgetMobile

| So if I have to replace my BB I would pay another $99? That's not exactly what I would describe as lifetime. BBs are not alive in the first place, but I am. I'll stick with free and battery-saving Google Maps, thanks. | |

There are several free applications that you can download to pay $100 for this one. Amaze, and Google maps are both good. |
